True "Self-Esteem"
In his column ,in yesterday's Wall Street Journal, Jeff Zaslow wrote about the feeling of entitlement among young adults, and points to experts who argue that Mr. Roger's mantra "You're Special," has worked its way into the culture and may help explain the feeling of entitlement many young people have today - for example, why many college students come into professor's offices demanding A's.
My take. Well of course this was bound to happen. Anytime we get away from the Truth that is God's Word things get off track.
The Word of God tells us that God made us "in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." (Genesis 1:27)
This is the only reason we are "special". Not because of anything we have done (or not done). We should be teaching our children this truth in order to build their so-called self-esteem. We need to tell them: "You are not the center of the universe. You are one of many who are created in God's image." Teaching them they are created (that's the key word here) will lead them into a sense of humbleness in our children. A knowing that there is someone greater than himself or herself.
It's only as we view life and our world through the lens of God's Word will our lives get "back on track". Living by the Truths of God cannot help create lives that are abundant, joyful and prosperous.
