Thanksgiving

O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: his  mercy endureth for ever.
Psalm 106:1

As far back as I can remember Thanksgiving Day has always been my favorite holiday. During my young school days, I loved the holiday because I knew we would be out of school for two days and Christmas was just around the corner.

As an adult and after giving my life to Christ, I developed a different reason for loving this holiday. Thanksgiving became a day of giving thanks to God for all the blessing He has bestowed upon me, my family and our country.

The common historic misconception is that the original American Thanksgiving Day was centered on a time of harvest feasting by the Pilgrims and Indians.  But that could be no further from the thruth. The original Thanksgiving was a gathering together of the Pilgrims to publicly recognize the favor of Almighty God and the provision He bestowed upon them in difficult circumstances.

Please read the article below taken from the Patriot PostIt gives an excellent history of the "First Thanksgiving" celebration.

God's blessings and peace upon you and your loves ones this Thanksgiving.

The Necessity of Thanksgiving

In this era of overblown political correctness, we often hear tales of Thanksgiving that stray far afield from the truth. Contemporary textbook narratives of the first American harvest celebration portray the Pilgrim colonists as having given thanks to their Indian neighbors for teaching them how to survive in a strange new world. This, of course, is in stark contrast to the historical record, in which the colonists gave thanks to God Almighty, the Provider of their blessings.

The “First Thanksgiving” is usually depicted as the Pilgrims’ three-day feast in early November 1621. The Pilgrims, Calvinist Protestants who rejected the institutional Church of England, believed that the worship of God must originate freely in the individual soul, under no coercion. The Pilgrims left Plymouth, England, on 6 September 1620, sailing to the New World on the promise of opportunity for religious and civil liberty.

For almost three months, 102 seafarers braved the brutal elements, arriving off what is now the Massachusetts coast. On 11 December, before disembarking at Plymouth Rock, the voyagers signed the Mayflower Compact (http://PatriotPost.US/histdocs/mc.htm), America’s original document of civil government predicated on principles of self-government. While still anchored at Provincetown harbor, Pastor John Robinson counseled, “You are become a body politic... and are to have only them for your... governors which yourselves shall make choice of.” Governor William Bradford described the Mayflower Compact as “a combination... that when they came a shore they would use their owne libertie; for none had power to command them...”

Upon landing, the Pilgrims conducted a prayer service and quickly turned to building shelters. Malnutrition and illness during the ensuing New England winter killed nearly half their number. Through prayer and hard work, with the assistance of their Wampanoag Indian friends, the Pilgrims reaped a rich harvest in the summer of 1621, the bounty of which they shared with the Wampanoag. The celebration incorporated feasting and games, which remain holiday traditions.

Such ready abundance soon waned, however. Under demands from investors funding their endeavor, the Pilgrims had acquiesced to a disastrous arrangement holding all crops and property in common, in order to return an agreed-to half of their produce to their overseas backers. (These financiers insisted they could not trust faraway freeholders to split the colony’s profits honestly.) Within two years, Plymouth was in danger of foundering under famine, blight and drought. Colonist Edward Winslow wrote, “The most courageous were now discouraged, because God, which hitherto had been our only shield and supporter, now seemed in his anger to arm himself against us.”

Governor Bradford’s record of the history of the colony describes 1623 as a period of arduous work coupled with “a great drought... without any rain and with great heat for the most part,” lasting from spring until midsummer. The Plymouth settlers followed the Wampanoag’s recommended cultivation practices carefully, but their crops withered.

The Pilgrims soon thereafter thought better of relying solely on the physical realm, setting “a solemn day of humiliation, to seek the Lord by humble and fervent prayer, in this great distress.” In affirmation of their faith and providing a great witness to the Indians, by evening of that day the skies became overcast and gentle rains fell, restoring the yield of the fields. Governor Bradford noted, “And afterwards the Lord sent to them such seasonable showers, with interchange of fair warm weather as, through His blessing caused a fruitful and liberal harvest, to their no small comfort and rejoicing. For which mercy, in time convenient, they also set apart a day of thanksgiving.”

Winslow noted the Pilgrims’ reaction as believing “it would be great ingratitude, if secretly we should smother up the same, or content ourselves with private thanksgiving for that, which by private prayer could not be obtained. And therefore another solemn day was set apart and appointed for that end; wherein we returned glory, honor, and praise, with all thankfulness, to our good God, which dealt so graciously with us...” This was the original American Thanksgiving Day, centered not on harvest feasting (as in 1621) but on gathering together to publicly recognize the favor and provision of Almighty God.

Bradford’s diary recounts how the colonists repented of their financial folly under sway of their financiers: “At length, after much debate of things, the Governor (with the advice of the chiefest amongst them) gave way that they should set corn every man for his own particular, and in that regard trust to themselves; in all other things to go in the general way as before. And so assigned to every family a parcel of land, according to the proportion of their number.”

By the mid-17th century, autumnal Thanksgivings were common throughout New England; observance of Thanksgiving Festivals spread to other colonies during the American Revolution. At other junctures of “great distress” or miraculous intervention, colonial leaders called their countrymen to offer prayerful thanks to God. The Continental Congresses, cognizant of the need for a warring country’s continuing grateful entreaties to God, proclaimed yearly Thanksgiving days during the Revolutionary War, from 1777 to 1783.

In 1789, after adopting the Bill of Rights, among the first official acts of Congress was approving a motion for proclamation of a national day of thanksgiving, recommending that citizens gather together and give thanks to God for their new nation’s blessings. Presidents George Washington, John Adams and James Madison followed the custom of declaring national days of thanks, though it was not officially declared again until another moment of national peril, when during the War Between the States Abraham Lincoln invited “the whole American people” to observe “a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father... with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience.” In 1941, Congress set permanently November’s fourth Thursday as our official national Thanksgiving.

The Pilgrims’ temporary folly of sundering and somersaulting the material as transcendent over the spiritual conveys an important lesson that modern histories are reluctant to tell. The Founders, recognizing this, placed first among constitutionally recognized rights the free exercise of religion—faith through action.

If what we seek is a continuance of God s manifold blessings, then a day of heartfelt thanksgiving is a tiny tribute indeed.

This Thanksgiving, please pray for our Patriot Armed Forces standing in harm’s way around the world, and for their families—especially the families of those fallen Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen who have died in defense of American liberty.

No Coincidences Here Folks

Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. 4 For he is God's minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God's minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.

The fact that all these "ministers of God" are involved in some type of ongoing of moral controversy is not a coincidence ladies and gentlemen. It is a divine move of God. A holy shakin' is goin' on now!

Word of warning to other ministries. Better make sure your own houses are in order or the Holy Spirit will expose your mess too! In fact, this should serve as a warning to all believers. God is not mocked! Learn a lesson from all this before you own "misdeeds" (Ed. back in the day what we called sins) are exposed to the world by God's divine light. Get right with God now!

Today's Quote

"The answers for this nation's...problems won't be found in the promises of a politician but in the words of a preacher!"

—Bill Keller, Founder & Host of LivePrayer

Be Like Bill

Bill Keller, the world's largest internet evangelist, embarrasses so-called Christians because quite often he has the balls (pardon my French) to say to millions what "mainstream" Christians can't or won't say to this lost and fallen world. And very often he is correct in his evaluations.

Here's a sample of some of his recent writing:

As a follower of Christ, a servant of the most high Lord, all we have is His message.  NOTHING ELSE!  Despite the illusion so many high profile men and women of God are under, especially those who are on TV, they are not celebrities, they are not stars, and this is not Hollywood!  We are nothing more than spokespeople for the Lord and despite how clever we may convince ourselves into thinking we are, we only have one message that matters, THE GOSPEL!  All the rest is wood, hay, and stubble!  If we are doing what we do for ANY other reason than to serve the Lord, if we have any other message but the Gospel, than we have totally failed God!

Wow! The rest of Bill's devotional can be read by clicking here.

Hey There!

Well, after a month's absence from blogging, to paraphrase General Douglas MacArthur, "I have returned!"  LaShawn Barber had some interesting things to say yesterday on the direction her blogg has taken. Check it out.

She’s left some big shoes to fill in the blogosphere. Maybe I can pick up some from where she’s left off. (A guy can still dream can’t he???).

A Great Shaking Going On

"When thus it shall be in the midst of the land among the people, there shall be as the shaking of an olive tree, and as the gleaning grapes when the vintage is done."                                             -- Isaiah 24:13 (King James Version)

It has been a tough week for evangelicals. First Juanita Bynum is brutally asaulted by her husband Bishop Weeks (more to follow on this one). Then  Bill Keller's Live Prayer program gets booted off the air by a Tampa TV station. Next Randy and Paula White, founding pastors of Without Walls International Church in Tampa, announce they're getting divorced. Finally, on Sunday, it was announced at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale that its pastor for nearly 50 years, the Rev. D. James Kennedy, is officially retiring.

Is God doing a great shaking or what?

Thoughts on a Lazy Summer Afternoon

I can remember way back when in elementary school we had to stand up in front of the class on Monday mornings and give a report on current events.

So, as we come to the end of another lazy-hazy summer month, I'd like to give you my take on a few new items from July.

2008 Presidential Campaign
Enough already!

I don't know about you but I'm already tired of 2008 Presidential campaign. It's still a year and half away from now. I think part of this feeling stems from my belief that Conservative Christians were fooled into voting for Bush, not once by twice.

I can recall top Conservative Christian Leaders like, Dr. James Dobson, Pat Robertson and the late Jerry Falwell strongly encouraging Christians to vote for George W. Bush.

I read numerous opinion pieces from those on the so-call Religious Right telling us how it was our duty to vote and in many cases how we should vote.

Now, with another election around the bend, I'd like to say to all those folks I've mentioned above, "Fool me once shame on you! But fool me twice, shame on me!"  I'm not buying it this time around. If, after my prayer before God, I don't believer there is a conservative candidate running in the race, I won't vote.

Harry Potter Hoopla
Is there any wonder who's captivating the world?

English Author J.K. Rowling, of the famed Harry Potter series, posted staggering numbers in book sales with the release of her latest record-breaker book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. At last take, it's said that the Potter series has sold a staggering 340 million copies. Now compare that to the number of Bibles sold (250 million copies) over that same time period. Says a lot about who we are as a people, does it not? It's all about the manna baby!

Do you recall how Rowling says she got the idea for Harry Potter?  I'll quote her directly. She says," I was traveling back to London on my own on a crowded train, that the idea for Harry Potter simply fell into my head."

Now here's a "hmmm?" moment.  Any Christian worth his or her own salt knows that the adversary is the prince of power (or ruler) of the air.  (Ephesians 2:2) And as such, he tirelessly works to supplant God and faith in His word. He does this by planting evil thoughts and temptations in weak human minds. No? Read The Screwtape Letters by another English author, C. S. Lewis.  So, I'm not saying, but I wonder where or who Ms. Rowling's idea really came from?

Faith and Fathers
So tell me something new already.

American family scholars Loren Marks and David Dollahite, of the School of Human Ecology at Louisiana State University, recently published the results of their scientific study of the family. According to professor Marks, "Research, ours and that of the past, indicates that religious involvement tends to have a positive influence on father-child relationships."

No kidding!

Marks goes on to say, "married couples who are actively involved in the same faith tend to have stronger, happier marriages and this impacts father-child relationships in a positive way."

Whoa! What a revelation! I could have told you all this without the expense of time and money used in this study.  Just read the Word of God.

A Hindu in the House

You shall have no other gods before Me."

 (Exodus 20:3 NKJV)

According to Bill Keller, host of LivePrayer, Thursday was a "sad day in our nation!"

Thursday was a dark day spiritually for our nation. For the first time since the Senate was formed in 1789, the opening prayer was delivered by a Hindu Chaplain.  This nation which was founded on "one nation UNDER GOD," prayed to the numerous false and non-existent gods of the Hindu religion.  Let me share with you a warning from God's Word. This comes from the Book of Deuteronomy, Chapter 8, Verse 19.  The Bible says, "If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed."  How can we expect God's protection and blessings when we have forsaken Him and are now worshipping the false gods of the world? When the next terrorist attack on our soil takes place, remember this day!

Thank God there were some Christians present during this prayer that stood against it. According to WorldNetDaily.com:

Three protesters interrupted a Hindu cleric today who became the first from his religion to offer the Senate's opening prayer...

"Lord Jesus, forgive us, Father, for allowing the prayer of the wicked, which is an abomination in your sight," said a male protester.

The Senate's sergeant at arms was instructed to restore order, but Zed was interrupted again.

"You shall have no other gods before you. ... "

I'll tell you what folks, these people had guts! God bless them!

My Take:

  • This is what happens when we allow these false and heathen religions into this county
  • It's not surprising since, as a nation, we've taken God out of the public square
  • Satan is always underfoot working to subvert the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, so no surprise here either
  • The Old Testament is rife with examples of the nation of Israel doing the same thing; think Baal, Moloch, et al
  • As our leaders continue down this path, the outlook for America is not good
  • God will eventually bring His judgment to pass on this nation if we continue to turn our backs to Him and worship other gods
  • Pray for revival. First within your own lives than for the nation as a whole. This is our only hope

Be blessed!

The True Church?

According to Pope Benedict XV, the head of 1.1 billion Catholic Church, Protestant churches are not really churches at all.

On Tuesday, the Pope approved and released a document stating that, "other Christian communities are either defective or not true churches and Catholicism provides the only true path to salvation."

Bill Keller, the host of Live Prayer with Bill Keller, the nation's only "live" call-in faith and values based program airing exclusively on secular TV and the Internet's leading evangelist at LivePrayer.com, said that he "was shocked and appalled at Pope Benedict's statement that all non-Roman Catholic churches are illegitimate since that is in complete contradiction to what the Bible teaches." Keller also went on to say that the Pope's "theology is also horribly flawed when he states that non-Catholic churches do not have the ‘manes of salvation' since salvation does not come from an ecclesiastical body but through God's grace and faith in Jesus Christ alone as clearly stated in Scripture!"

My Take:

  • The Pope's statement that all non-Roman Catholic churches are not true churches is false and not what the Bible teaches
  • The so-called "True Church" was established by Christ and existed nearly 400 years before what we know today as the Roman Catholic Church came into being
  • What makes a true Christian church? The Bible teaches that the true church (ekklesia) is made up of a body of Believers who have accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Savior.
  • By approving this document, Pope Benedict XVI has opened up old wounds of division and hatred between Catholics and Protestants
  • Satan is always working to defeat the Body of Christ through strife and division
  • Martin Luther broke with the Catholic Church when he challenged the authority of the Pope by emphasizing the Bible as the sole source (sola scriptura ) of religious authority and the true church of Jesus Christ is made of all those who confess faith alone in Christ as the only means of their salvation (sola fides); the "priesthood of all believers"
  • The Bible is our final authority in all matters (see 2 Timothy 3:16)

The B-I-B-L-E

The other day, I was listening to my son sing one of his favorite songs. It went something like this:

The B-I-B-L-E
Yes that's the book for me.
I stand alone on the Word of God
The B-I-B-L-E.

This simple song contains a very powerful truth. The Bible is the inspiried Word of God.  The Book of Hebrews says it is " living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penatrates even to dividing sould and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."

When comes down to it, God's Word is what matters most. It is what we should base everything in our lives upon. Our way of living is by standing upon the promises of God containin within His word. We need it. It is a must for joyful and abundant lives.

In Deuteronomy 8 Moses is telling the people not to forget God and reminds them of all the things that God has done, giving them manna from heaven to eat and then tell them that just like the bread that sustained you and gave you life the Lord says teach them that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.Vs. 3(NIV) As Christians, the Word of God should dwell within us richly (Col.3:16 NIV). We are to be doers of it (James 1:22). No matter what changes, God's Word will never passaway (Matthew 24:35).

When I am down and in need strength or encouragment, I go to the Bible. Iread the Psalms or some other verse that the Lord leads me too. I read his promies of help, refuge, stronghold and I leave strengthened. My entire outlook on life is better.

When I read the Bible I see the failures of sinful men and understand that I am not alone. And time and time again when failures, disappointments, disobedience happens and I Gods grace time and time again.  God reveals himself to us in the Bible. God reveals Himself to us in the Bible. He shows us how to overcome life's obstacles and how to live a victorious life.

Do you really believe the Bible today?  Do you believe it enough to base all of life's decisions upon it? Do you read it as often as you should? Is it the final authority on all you do or do you pick and choose what you want out of it? Do you sit and read it with your families at home? Is it on your minds throughout your waking moments?

The B-I-B-L-E, yes that's the book for me, is it for you?

Share your thoughts and thanks for reading.

P.S. Focus on the Family's Citizenlink.org posted the following article on the Bible:

Most Americans See Bible as Major Source of Truth
from staff reports

SUMMARY: Protestants are more likely to see it as without error.

Protestants are most likely to credit the Bible as the inerrant word of God to be taken literally, according to a Gallup Poll. The rest of the population largely said the Bible might be inspired by God, but not literally so.

Gallup has been asking the question since 1991, and the answers remain remarkably unchanged. About 31 percent said they believe the Good Book is infallible. Forty-seven percent said they see the Bible as the inspired word of God, but not to be taken literally.

Frank Newport, editor in chief at Gallup, said we still live in a country where God’s word is taken seriously.

“Religious people around the world who believe that a religious document is inerrant will engage in behaviors and support types of policies which are significantly different than others might and those have real implications for society,” he told Family News in Focus.

The other steady result is that belief in the Bible correlates with church attendance and Protestant theology. Dr. Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, said such a connection makes sense.

“People who take the Bible seriously are going to go to church," he said. "And if they go to church, they’re going to hear sermons, and they’re going to have Sunday school lessons that are going to teach them that the Bible is the inerrant and infallible word of God.”

Add the people who say the whole Bible is the direct word of God with those who see it as divinely inspired, but who do not take all parts literally, and nearly 80 percent of Americans consider the Bible to be a major source of truth.

“This is a very religious country," Land said, "and it’s getting more so, not less so."
